Crittenden County became Kentucky's 91st county in 1842, named in honor of John J. Crittenden, a Kentucky governor, U.S. Senator, and U.S. Attorney General. The land is beautifully diversified with rolling hills, bluffs, and many farms and woodlands. The county contains 365 square miles and is bounded by the Ohio River (northwest and west), the Tradewater River (north), and the Cumberland River (southwest).

In 2006, Crittenden County had a population of 8,874. The population of Marion was 3,049.


Crittenden County is known for mild winters.
